Surely there is a hybrid number for this popular cane, perhaps CP 36-111, but it is known locally as Government Improved Red. There was an old variety called Louisiana Purple, also called Home Purple or Home Red, Maybe this is it. It is a pale green cane which turns purplish-red when exposed to the sun. It is full of sweet juice and makes a delicious syrup. Also, it is soft enough to enjoy chewing, which makes it a favorite. It grows well from stubble, and I have had four or five excellent crops from one planting. This cane is hard to beat for my purposes. |
