While numerous significant varieties have come from the Proefstation Oost Java, P.O.J. 2878 has perhaps been the most outstanding. Work began on this variety in 1921, and through a series of interesting crosses it was finally released for the commercial market in 1928. It has a high sugar content, is highly disease resistant, and is a prolific grower. This was the variety which breathed new life into the sugar industry of several countries. It is very sweet, is medium dense, and grows well from stubble.
