Sugar Cane Varieties |
![]() |
Within the past one hundred and fifty years remarkable things have happened in the sugar cane industry. Research stations in the sugar producing nations of the world were established which in turn developed countless thousands of significant sugar cane hybrids. In India, where sugar was first produced, in Barbados, in Java, in Brazil as well as in the USA - Houma, Louisiana, and Canal Point, Florida developing a better producing, disease resistant cane is an ongoing endeavor.
The canes shown on this website were secured within a hundred mile radius of the farm in southeast Alabama. The names have come down through the years by word of mouth. I am sure a sugar cane specialist could study the genetics and identify each variety, but I present them for what they are called locally. I am always open for information which would help with more specific identification.
